About Xiangqi

Xiangqi, or Chinese chess, is a two-player strategy game that may be the most played board game on Earth by sheer number of players. Like chess, the goal is to checkmate the enemy leader, here called the general, but it's played on the intersections of the board and has pieces and rules all its own.

Chess players find it familiar for about ten minutes, then wonderfully alien. Cannons capture by leaping over exactly one piece, a river splits the board and changes how soldiers move, and the generals must hide in their palaces and may never face each other directly down an open file. These twists give Xiangqi a character entirely its own.

You can play Xiangqi free in your browser against the computer or a friend, with no download. If you know chess, the shared goal makes it approachable, and the new pieces are a fascinating puzzle to learn. Don't worry about mastering every rule at once, since a few games will teach you the essentials.
