About Gomoku

Gomoku is a two-player strategy game with one goal: be the first to line up five of your stones in a row. Players take turns placing stones on the intersections of a grid, and a winning line can run horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. The rule is simple, but the play is not.

The game comes from Japan, where it is taken seriously enough to have professional tournaments. Its depth comes from the open board, where every stone you place is both an attack and a defense. The key idea is the double threat: create two ways to make five at once, and your opponent can only block one, which ends the game instantly.

You can play Gomoku free in your browser against the computer or a friend on one screen, with no download. You'll understand the goal immediately, but learning to build and spot threats takes a few games. That gap between the one-line rule and the real strategy is exactly what makes it so rewarding.
