About Dots & Boxes

Dots and Boxes is a two-player game played on a grid of dots. Players take turns drawing a single line between two neighboring dots, and whenever your line completes the fourth side of a small square, you claim that box and take another turn. When the grid is full, whoever owns more boxes wins.

It looks like an idle doodling game, and for the first half it plays like one. Then the strategy bites. Because completing a box earns another move, boxes come in chains, and the player forced to open the first box of a long chain usually hands over the whole thing. Mathematicians have written serious papers about exactly this.

You can play Dots and Boxes free in your browser against the computer or a friend on one screen, with no download. The rules take seconds to learn, which makes it easy to start, but the real game, the one about who is forced to give away chains, reveals itself after a few rounds and keeps it interesting.
