About Alquerque

Alquerque is an ancient capture game, the thousand-year-old ancestor of checkers. Two sides of pieces battle on the intersections of a webbed board criss-crossed with lines, and the goal is to capture all of your opponent's pieces by jumping over them, a rule any checkers player will recognize instantly.

It came to Europe with the Moors and was important enough to be recorded in the game book of a Spanish king in 1283. Playing on the lines rather than the squares, and along diagonals as well as straight lines, gives it a slightly different flavor from its descendant, but the jump-and-take heart is unmistakable.

You can play Alquerque free in your browser against the computer or a friend, with no download. If you've played checkers, you'll feel at home in minutes, and there's a real pleasure in playing the game that started that whole family. It's simple to learn but sharp enough to reward planning your captures.
