About Royal Game of Ur

The Royal Game of Ur is one of the oldest board games in the world, around 4,500 years old, dug out of a royal cemetery in ancient Mesopotamia. Remarkably, we can still play it today because a Babylonian scribe wrote the rules down on a clay tablet. You race seven pieces along a track and off the board.

The heart of the game is a shared middle lane where both players' paths overlap, which is where the fighting happens. Land on an opponent's piece there and you knock it off the board to start over. Scattered along the track are rosette squares, which are safe and grant you another throw, making them prizes worth contesting.

You can play the Royal Game of Ur free in your browser against the computer with no download. It's easy to learn, and there's a real thrill in playing a game this ancient. The mix of a luck-based throw and the tactical battle over the shared lane and the rosettes keeps every match engaging.
