About Janggi

Janggi is Korean chess, a close cousin of Chinese chess that shares the palace and the cannons but rewrites many of the rules. Like its relatives, the aim is to checkmate the enemy general, but its distinct movements and its lack of a dividing river give it a faster, sharper, more tactical feel.

The differences add up to a game full of traps. There's no river, the elephants move more freely and farther than in Xiangqi, and the cannons are especially peculiar: they need another piece as a screen to move at all, and they can never jump over or capture another cannon. You can even pass your turn, which no other chess-like game allows.

You can play Janggi free in your browser against the computer or a friend, with no download. If you know Xiangqi or chess, many ideas carry over, but the reworked pieces reward fresh thinking. It's a loud, aggressive game where a well-set trap can decide things quickly.
