About Mancala
Mancala is a two-player game of scooping and sowing seeds around a board of small pits. You pick up all the seeds from one of your pits and drop them one by one into the pits ahead, aiming to gather the most seeds into your store. The counting is simple, but reading the board is a real skill.
It is not a single game but a whole family, played across Africa and Asia for well over a thousand years, with ancient boards found carved into temple stones. That deep history is part of its appeal, along with how a plain-looking move can set up a capture several turns later, once you learn to see it.
You can play Mancala free in your browser against the computer with no download. The rules take only a turn or two to understand, since every move is just scoop and sow, but planning captures and extra turns gives it lasting depth. If you're new to sowing games, this is a friendly place to start.
Controls
You play by choosing a pit to sow from. Tap one of the pits on your side, and all its seeds are picked up and dropped one at a time into the following pits, moving counterclockwise around the board.
Two special outcomes reward good moves:
- Landing in your store with your last seed earns you another turn, so a well-counted move can let you go again and chain several moves together.
- Capturing happens when your last seed lands in an empty pit on your own side. You take that seed plus all the seeds in the pit directly opposite, scooping them into your store.
The game ends when one player's side is empty, and whoever has gathered the most seeds in their store wins.
Against the computer, the difficulty rises across eight levels, so the opponent plans captures and extra turns more sharply as you climb.
Tips
- Chase extra turns. Landing your last seed in your store lets you move again, so lining up several of these in a row lets you make a lot of progress before your opponent gets a turn.
- Count the pits before you sow. Every move is exact, so counting how many seeds a pit holds tells you precisely where your last seed lands, which is how you set up captures and extra turns on purpose.
- Set up captures across the board. Emptying a pit so you can later land in it and scoop the seeds opposite is the heart of the game, so watch which of your empty pits face a full enemy pit.
- Protect your vulnerable pits. A pit of yours facing an empty enemy pit is a capture waiting to happen, so consider emptying or filling it before your opponent can strike.
- Don't just play your rightmost pit. It's tempting to keep sowing from the pit nearest your store, but varying which pit you empty keeps your options open and sets up better captures.
- Think a few moves ahead. The best captures are built over several turns, so picturing how the seeds will move after your play helps you spot chains your opponent won't see coming.
