About Untangle
Untangle covers a board of peg studs with colored elastic ropes, each pinned by its two end-knobs and woven over and under the others. You drag rope ends between pegs to unweave the mess, and the level is solved when no rope crosses another.
The twist is the layer stack: a rope trapped under others can't be grabbed until you move the ropes lying on top of it, and every rope you drop lands on top of the pile. So it plays like untangling a real knot โ you peel from the top down, and the order of your moves matters as much as where you put things.
You can play Untangle free in your browser with no download. Every tangle is scrambled from a solved layout with legal moves, so it can always be unwound. Early levels are gentle; later ones add more ropes, denser knots and a move limit, with a Hint that shows the next unweaving step.
Controls
You play by dragging rope ends, with your finger on a phone or a held mouse button on a laptop. Grab the knob at either end of a rope and drop it on any free peg โ the rope stretches and sags like real elastic.
Two rules make it a puzzle:
- Dragging an end moves that end of the rope to a free peg. Each peg holds one end, and a dropped rope always lands on top of the pile.
- The pin rule means a rope crossed by ropes above it is stuck โ grabbing it just makes it shake and flashes whatever is pinning it. Free the top ropes first.
The bar above the board shows how untangled you are, and the counter shows crossings left. From level four onward there's also a move limit โ running out means retrying the same tangle.
Hint performs the next unweaving move for you. Boards, rope counts and starting knots all grow across eight levels.
Tips
- Peel from the top. The rope on top of the pile is never pinned, so when you're stuck, find the highest rope that still crosses something and move that one โ it always works.
- Use the empty pegs as parking. Free pegs are a resource. Parking a troublesome rope on two quiet pegs at the edge clears space and un-pins everything that was trapped beneath it.
- Watch what you drop on top. Every drop lands over everything else, so laying a rope across the middle can pin ropes you still need to move. Land it somewhere clear.
- Shorten before you re-route. Moving an end to a nearby peg first can slip a rope out of several crossings at once, where a long throw across the board might create new ones.
- Mind the move limit. On later levels, each drag counts. Read the tangle before touching it and plan which two or three moves actually reduce crossings instead of shuffling ropes around.
- Let the Hint teach you. Hint replays the scramble in reverse, which is exactly how a perfect solver would unweave it โ watching a couple of hints shows you the peeling pattern to copy.
Frequently asked questions
Is Untangle free to play?
Yes. You can play as many tangles as you want with no download and no account.
How do you play Untangle?
You drag the knobs at the ends of each rope onto free pegs. Ropes weave over and under each other, and you win by reaching a layout where no rope crosses another.
Why can't I grab a rope?
It's pinned โ one or more ropes higher in the pile cross it. The game shakes the stuck rope and flashes the ropes on top; move those first and it comes free.
Is every tangle solvable?
Yes. Each level starts as a solved, crossing-free layout that's scrambled with legal moves, so unwinding those moves always leads back to zero crossings โ the Hint button literally shows that path.
What happens if I run out of moves?
From level four there's a move limit. Running out means retrying the same tangle with a fresh move count โ nothing is lost but the attempt.
Can I play Untangle on my phone?
Yes. It's built for touch โ you drag rope ends with your finger, with magnetic snapping onto pegs โ and works well in any modern mobile browser.
