About Unblock
Unblock is a sliding puzzle about escaping a traffic jam. A grid is packed with blocks of different sizes, and one special red block needs to reach the exit. The problem is that other blocks are in the way, so you slide them around to clear a path.
The puzzle looks like a crowded parking lot, and that everyday image is part of why it clicks so easily. Each block can only slide along its own direction, never turn, so freeing the red block becomes a chain of moves where you have to shuffle several pieces just to open one lane. It feels impossible right up until it suddenly isn't.
Every board here was authored and verified solvable by a search program, so the answer always exists even when it seems like it cannot. You can play free in your browser with no download. It is easy to understand at a glance, and the real challenge, and the real bragging right, is solving each board in as few moves as possible.
Controls
You play by tapping blocks, not dragging them. Tap a block to select it, or click it with a mouse on a laptop, then tap or click the cell you want it to reach; it slides there in a straight line, stopping the moment another block or the wall is in the way.
How the blocks move is strictly limited:
- Horizontal blocks slide only left and right. Vertical blocks slide only up and down. No block can ever be rotated or lifted.
- The red block is the one you are trying to free. It slides toward the exit on the edge of the board, but only once the blocks blocking its lane are moved aside.
Blocks cannot overlap or pass through each other, so the puzzle is entirely about the order you move them. Undo steps back one move if a slide didn't help.
You solve a board by sliding the red block out through the exit, and the move counter tracks how efficiently you did it, since fewer slides is always the real goal.
Tips
- Find the red block's lane first. Everything you do serves one purpose: clearing the row the red block sits in, so start by identifying exactly which blocks are in its way to the exit.
- Work backward from the exit. Ask what needs to move for the red block to reach the exit, then what needs to move to make room for those blocks. Planning in reverse reveals the chain of moves.
- Don't move blocks aimlessly. Random sliding usually creates new jams, so make sure each move either clears the red block's path or frees a block that is in the way of clearing it.
- Create space before you need it. A block you must move later needs somewhere to go, so opening up an empty area in advance prevents you from getting boxed in mid-solution.
- Think about move count. Since every board has a solution, the real challenge is efficiency, so once you can solve a board, try to find a shorter path with fewer slides.
- Undo and rethink when jammed. If you reach a position where nothing helps, an earlier move was wrong. Backing up and clearing the path in a different order is the way through.
Frequently asked questions
Is Unblock free to play?
Yes. You can play as many boards as you want with no download and no account.
How do you play Unblock?
You slide blocks around a crowded grid to clear a path for one special red block. Each block moves only along its own direction, and the goal is to slide the red block out through the exit on the edge.
Is every board solvable?
Yes. Each board was created and checked by a search program to guarantee a solution exists, so you never face an impossible puzzle. If you're stuck, an earlier move closed off the path.
Why can't I move a block the way I want?
Blocks slide only along their length, horizontal ones sideways and vertical ones up and down, and they cannot rotate or pass through each other. If a block won't move, something is blocking its lane.
Can I play Unblock on my phone?
Yes. It runs in any modern mobile browser, and you move blocks with a tap, not a drag, so it works well on phones and tablets.
How do I get better at Unblock?
Identify the red block's lane, plan backward from the exit, and make sure every move serves clearing that path. Once you can solve a board, aim to do it in fewer moves for the real challenge.
